PESCI Interview Timeline: What to Expect at Every Stage

Stage 1: Secure a Position

Before arranging a PESCI assessment, applicants generally require a confirmed offer of employment for a specific position.

Your PESCI assessment is not a generic examination. It is tailored to the Position Description provided by your employer. The panel considers the duties of the role, the level of supervision, the clinical setting, and the patient population when conducting the assessment.

At this stage, it is helpful to:

• Read your Position Description carefully.

• Understand the services provided by the practice or facility.

• Review the proposed supervision arrangements.

• Consider the clinical responsibilities you may be expected to undertake.

Stage 2: Submit Your IME PESCI Application

Once you have your employment documentation, you can submit an application through IME.

Applicants are generally required to provide documents such as:

• Curriculum vitae (CV)

• Position Description

• Certified copy of Passport

• Training Plan (if applicable)

• Evidence of AMC MCQ completion or eligibility through the Competent Authority Pathway

• A recognised Medical qualification

Providing complete and accurate documentation assists IME in reviewing your application efficiently.

Stage 3: Application Review by IME

IME will review your application to ensure all required documentation has been received and that sufficient information is available to conduct a position-specific PESCI assessment.

If any information is missing or requires clarification, our enrolments team will contact you. Once the application is approved, an interview date can be arranged.

Stage 4: Preparing for Your Interview

The period before your interview is an opportunity to become familiar with the expectations of Australian clinical practice and your proposed role.

Candidates often use this time to:

• Review their Position Description.

• Refresh relevant clinical knowledge.

• Remain familiar with contemporary Australian clinical practice relevant to the proposed role.

• Reflect on safe clinical decision-making and professional responsibilities.

• Practise communicating clinical reasoning clearly and respectfully.

The AMC PESCI process is designed to assess safe clinical practice, professional judgement, communication, and understanding of scope of practice, rather than memorised answers.

Stage 5: The PESCI Interview

On the day of your interview, you will meet with an appropriately constituted PESCI panel. The interview is structured and focuses on the position for which the assessment has been requested.

The purpose of the interview is to determine whether you can practise safely within the proposed role under the available supervision arrangements.

The assessment is conducted using structured scenarios and questions relevant to the proposed role. The panel assesses whether the candidate can demonstrate safe and appropriate clinical reasoning, communication and professional judgement within the context of the position.

Stage 6: Assessment Outcome

Following the assessment, the panel prepares a PESCI outcome report. IME provides the completed report to the relevant requesting authority in accordance with regulatory requirements. IME aims to finalise and submit the report within 14 business days of the assessment.
