About the Program

The Advanced Skills in Skin Cancer Medicine course is delivered predominantly via face-to-face attendance weekend. Further course delivery is facilitated via the IME's interactive online learning platform.

During this 2-day attendance workshop, attendees build on their existing knowledge via developing advanced skills including exceptions to basic algorithms, advanced management options, approach to diagnosis and management of complex skin cancers, and advanced skills in local anaesthesia, operative technique, and wound closure.

This course meets the current accreditation standards for continuous professional development (CPD).

    Subject Structure

Prior to attendance of this weekend workshop, participants must complete the mandatory pre-reading module. Secondly, participants attend the workshop which consists of 8 key teaching sessions related to the principles of skin cancer medicine. Thirdly, participants may elect to revise attendance lectures, slides, and supplementary resources via the online learning portal. Finally, participants must complete a short professional submission and online examination requiring clinical application of learned principles.  In order to be awarded certification, participants must clear the pass hurdle set by the academic faculty (using the Hofstee method).

      Subject Content

Participants in the Advanced Skills in Skin Cancer Medicine course will develop the following competencies:

      • Understanding of the pathophysiology of skin cancer with a focus on melanoma and the genetic basis of disease
      • Insight into the study of dermatopathology including important dermoscopic signs and their significance/association with disease
      • Knowledge of common exceptions to basic diagnostic algorithms with a focus on mimics and avoidance of false negatives in melanoma diagnosis
      • Diagnosis of less common cancers such as adnexal carcinomas, Paget’s disease, sarcomas, Merkel cell carcinoma, vascular lesions, and other rare cancers
      • Knowledge of the indications for and nature of advanced skin cancer management options including review of topical and immunotherapies, curettage and electrodessication, cryosurgery, Moh’s micrographic surgery, and management of disseminated skin cancer
      • Practical competency in administration of advanced anaesthesia including detailed review of agents, and performance of field and other nerve blocks
      • Practical competency in administration of local anaesthesia and pre-operative considerations including excision margins
      • Practical competency in performing curettage and complex anatomical excisions such as those involving the joints and digits
      • Practical competency in advanced haemostasis including the use of cautery
      • Practical competency in the indications for and performance of advanced wound closure techniques including buried sutures, X-sutures, S-plasty, and closure of wide or uneven wounds

      Day 1 Session 1:

      9:00 - 10:30

      Introduction to dermatopathology

      Day 1 Session 2:

      11:00 - 12:30

Common exceptions to the basic algorithms used to diagnose skin cancer

Dermoscopic findings of skin cancer, advanced pattern analysis, melanoma mimics, mimics of melanoma, and avoiding false negatives in melanoma

      Day 1 Session 3:

      13:30 - 15:00

Approach to diagnosis and management of rare types of skin cancer

Including adnexal carcinoma, Paget's disease, sarcomas, Merkel cell carcinoma, vascular, and other rare neoplastic lesions

      Day 1 Session 4:

      15:30 - 17:00

      Advanced management options

Includes review of topical and immunotherapies, curettage and electrodessication, cryosurgery, Moh's microscopic surgery, and management principles of disseminated disease

      Day 2 Session 5:

      9:00 - 10:30

      Advanced anaesthesia (practical)

Detailed review of local anaesthetic agents, overview of nerve blocks, and discussion, demonstration and practice of field blocks, hydrodissection and local anaesthesia

      Day 2 Session 6:

      11:00 - 12:30

      Advanced operative techniques (practical)

Discussion, demonstration, and practice of curettage, excisions in complex regions (joints and digits), and advanced haemostasis/cautery

      Day 2 Session 7:

      1:30 - 15:00

      Advanced wound closure techniques (practical)

Discussion, demonstration and practice of advanced wound closure techniques including buried sutures, X sutures, S-plasty, and closure of wide, uneven, and multiple wounds

      Day 2 Session 8:

      15:30 - 17:00

      Case-based learning

Presentation and discussion of cases that summarise learning outcomes over the two days

      Entry Requirements

The course is suitable for general practitioners (GPs), GP registrars and international medical graduates (IMGs) with significant experience in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer.

Doctors who have minimal experience should first consider enrolment into the Foundations of Skin Cancer Medicine course (SC101).

      Exit Examination

To ensure the course meets current accreditation standards for continuous professional development, participants are required to complete a professional submission and exit examination.

The professional submission requires the participant to summarise their new scope of practice including a personal synopsis of acquired competencies. This submission is required to be submitted within 3 months of the completion of the live workshop component of this course. In order to continue to build proficiency, participants also receive a template logbook for keeping track of future skin cancer presentations and their management (this does not need to be submitted).

The exit examination must be completed within three months of attending the live workshop component of this course. The exit examination for this course is comprised of two online examination components:

      • Active response to clinical cases: Participants must complete 4 online clinical cases in the domain of skin cancer surgery. Participants must provide their own unique response along with their approach to management in order to pass these tasks. This component of assessment is pass/fail based on demonstration of a safe and efficacious approach to diagnosis and management.
      • Completion of a multiple choice question (MCQ) exam: This component of assessment consists of scenario-based MCQ questions. The questions are written to specifically assess the listed course objectives.
